Emergency contraception (EC), or emergency postcoital contraception, refers to contraceptive measures that, if taken after sex, may prevent pregnancy. Emergency contraceptive pills are drugs that act both to prevent ovulation or fertilization and possibly post-fertilization implantation of a blastocyst (embryo).
